'I really, really want to get out'

A Utah man stuck in the crevice of famous cave tourist attraction for more than 26 hours died as rescuers struggled to save him.

John Edward Jones, 26, of Stansbury Park, was trapped in the Nutty Putty Cave, located west of Utah Lake near Cedar Valley, according to the Utah County Sheriff's office.

The cave sits 55 to 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. Jones entered the cave at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a group of about 11 people, he got trapped at 8:45 p.m. In the "tightly confined" feature of Nutty Putty Cave called "Bob's Push."

Jones was stuck upside down in a crevice about 18 inches deep and about 10 inches long. The crevice, according to the sheriff's department is approximately 150 feet below the surface and about 700 feet from the cave entrance.


They had him to a level spot where he wasn't heading downhill with his head below his feet.

In the process of that they had a raising system to hold him in position, and one of the devices in that system failed, and Mr. Jones eventually fell back to the area where he had been trapped for so long. Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, the rescuers had come even close enough to Jones to conclude that he was not breathing and had no pulse. Rescue officials worked on Thursday to determine how to recover Jones's body.

Rescuers had been attempting to reach Jones for more than 24 hours, but had difficulty negotiating the treacherous terrain and getting people to him is very difficult. Other than that, it is a tightly confined space and hen there is movement, it is literally millimeters at a time.

There are narrow areas of the cave where visitors have to crawl on their belly to get in according to the website of the attraction. Up to 5,000 people visit the site each year.
