Media is a new norm in our life that keeps updating every moment that is happening around us. Research says that each person have more than three social media applications installed in their smart phones. Three common applications that every smart phone have is Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook. Others are just add ons such as Telegram, Tik Tok, Snapchat, Wechat and etc.

Compared to 15 years back, we gain news information from the news channel and also newspaper. Digitalization was not well established at that moment. Some sit in the kopitiam shops and watch the television together or chit chat by sharing the latest news, but if you look back at this time, even uncles and aunties are accessed to the latest information of world news in their smart phones.

 As time goes by, the media also transforms their accessibility to the latest where everybody can gain and access information. For example, each newspaper organizations has their own websites such as www.thestar.com , www.thesundaily.com. Instead of buying the newspaper, you can gain information of latest news updated seconds to seconds in their websites.

That is a real good move because let’s say if the newspaper industry have slow downed, these organization don’t have to worry because they have their company running through media. Journalist will be able to continue their work and updating time to time. The Nesan, oldest Tamil language newspaper published in Malaysia wouldn’t have shut downed. However, due to some circumstances, they had to.

However, there are many reasons why social media is important. First, as mentioned above it helps you to spread news faster and effectively. Publishing content is a big plus for all Journalist. Basically, you can publish content from anywhere anytime. There are many creative contents that can be published and reach to a larger audience.

                                            

Journalists are responsible to share their stories. Since social media has a major portion of younger generation, teenagers and middle-aged people, and research says that they are the major users of social media population. This would be a great platform for journalists to make social media as a highly effective tool for communicating breaking news. Most of the users are teenagers and middle-aged people and our targeted social media is Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Next, spreading your journalism content with the power of twitter. It is said that Twitter is one of the social media giants and Twitter is still the most prolific in the journalism world. It has been ranked as the top social site for breaking news. Twitter is such a great platform for breaking news and following stories because it’s instant and Journalist can build stories in real time while monitoring it.

With social media, Journalist can expand their broadcast journalism online by having conference or meeting via social media applications. Journalist from all around the world can gather and arrange a meeting anywhere anytime. For example, few Unisel students from Critical Issue class attended a workshop co-hosted by the High Commission of Canada and The Embassy of Finland. The workshop was attended by Journalist from Malaysia and also abroad.
