Caring for your smartphones

No one is seen without one these days. Smartphones has become a basic necessity today. However, having a smartphones doesn't mean it is bound to last forever, unless, you take proper care of them. I've been sitting at home for months ever since the coronavirus pandemic and yes, I spend most of my time with my phone. It kinda annoys me when the battery drains so fast and I have to wait patiently for it to recharge. Today I came across an article on how to care for smartphones. So thought I'd share it and here we go.

First things first, what is a carbon footprint? According to WHO, a carbon footprint corresponds to the whole amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) produced to, directly and indirectly, support a person’s lifestyle and activities. Carbon footprints are usually measured in equivalent tons of CO2, during the period of a year, and they can be associated with an individual, an organization, a product or an event, among others. One thing we can do to improve the carbon footprint of our smartphones is to take care of its battery by recharging it less and this leads to a longer lifespan. Here are some ways to help you get started:

    1) Lower the brightness

The first, basic trick. And in fact, high brightness is bad for your eyes and also to your phone battery. You can either lower the brightness or set it at 'automatic' so that the display can adapt to the ambient lighting.

    2) Dark mode

I love dark mode. It doesn't just soothes my eye but it is pretty cool. Turning on dark mode has its advantages. Firstly, it helps keep your device live longer by saving battery life. And secondly, it eases your eye. it is recommended that you turn on dark mode during the evening and before going to bed. I on the other hand, keep my dark mode on at all times. My eye hurts less and my battery lasts longer.

    3) Optimise application

One way to ensure your battery lasts long is to make sure there are no running apps in your phones. Close apps once you've down using them. Don't leave them running at the background as it will definitely drain the battery. Also, you can delete apps that you no longer use. It not only saves battery but also saves space.

    4) Cut connection

Bluetooth and WiFi. They really gulp up power. Do remember to switch off these connections once you're done using them. Leaving them on, will only allow them to search for new connections. Same thing goes for GPS. Using GPS does drain power therefore it is recommended that you turn off your location when not it use. However, it is okay to allow specific apps to access to GPS.

    5) Power-saving mode

Almost all phone models now come with power-saving mode. Power-saving mode monitors your battery. When the battery reaches a certain percentage, it will shut down certain apps of features to avoid the battery from draining out. Power-saving mode can also be found in computers and laptops.

    6) Change the battery, not the device

If your battery dies, better replace them than buying a new phone, unless you opt for ethical smartphones. It is cheaper than getting a new phone.

So these are some ways you can care for your smartphones, especially during this lockdown period.
